The Best Beaches Near Lagos, Algarve – A Local Guide
Lagos is home to some of the most beautiful beaches in the Algarve, from dramatic golden cliffs and hidden coves to long sandy beaches with plenty of space to relax.
But not every beach is right for every occasion.
Some are spectacular for photography but involve a long staircase. Others are much easier to reach with children or beach equipment. Some beaches are especially beautiful at sunrise, while others are perfect for watching the sun disappear into the Atlantic.
If you're visiting Lagos and wondering which beach is best for you, this guide compares the most beautiful beaches around Lagos by scenery, sunlight, crowds, accessibility and atmosphere.
Praia Dona Ana
Best for: iconic Algarve scenery, swimming, families and classic holiday photographs.
Praia Dona Ana is probably the beach most people picture when they imagine a beach in Lagos. Golden cliffs surround a sheltered bay, with clear blue-green water and dramatic rock formations.
It is one of the most popular beaches in Lagos, which means it can become busy during the summer months.
☀️ Sun & photography
Dona Ana is particularly beautiful in the morning, when the sunlight illuminates the cliffs and the beach has a fresher, calmer atmosphere.
For photography, early morning can be fantastic because there are fewer people and the light is soft.
In the late afternoon, the cliffs begin to create more shade across parts of the beach. The clifftop viewpoints can still be beautiful for photographs, but if you're looking specifically for direct golden-hour sunlight, I would usually consider Porto de Mós or the western-facing beaches instead.
🚶 Access
There is a staircase from the clifftop down to the beach. It is considerably easier than the famous staircase at Praia do Camilo, but it is still worth considering if you are travelling with a stroller, lots of beach equipment or someone with limited mobility.
The car park above the beach can become busy during July and August, especially from late morning onwards.

Praia do Camilo
Best for: dramatic photography, couples, adventurous visitors and postcard-perfect scenery.
Praia do Camilo is one of the most photographed beaches around Lagos. The tiny golden cove is surrounded by towering cliffs, rock formations and turquoise water.
The famous wooden staircase is part of the experience — but it is also the biggest disadvantage.
There are roughly 200 steps down to the beach, meaning that the walk back up can be quite a workout, especially on a hot summer afternoon.
☀️ Sun & photography
Camilo is especially beautiful in the early morning.
Sunrise gives the cliffs a warm glow while the beach is much quieter than later in the day. For photographers, this can make sunrise one of the best times to visit.
By the afternoon, parts of the small cove can fall into the shade of the surrounding cliffs.
👣 Crowds & access
Because the beach is relatively small, it fills up quickly in summer.
The staircase also makes Camilo unsuitable for anyone with significant mobility limitations, and it can be challenging with very young children and lots of beach equipment. If your priority is the photograph rather than easy beach access, Camilo is hard to beat.

Praia do Pinhão
Best for: couples, quieter moments and a small hidden-cove feeling.
Praia do Pinhão is a smaller beach located between Lagos town and Dona Ana.
It doesn't have the same dramatic scale as Dona Ana or Camilo, but that is part of its charm. It can feel more intimate and is a lovely option if you want to escape some of the crowds.
☀️ Sun & photography
Because of its position on the eastern side of the Lagos coastline, morning light is generally the better choice for photography.
It can be particularly pretty for intimate couple photographs when the sun is still relatively low.
🚶 Access
Like many of Lagos' smaller cliff beaches, Pinhão requires stairs to reach the sand.
It is therefore less convenient than Meia Praia, Porto de Mós or Praia da Luz if easy access is important.

Praia dos Estudantes
Best for: a quick visit, photography and the famous Roman-style stone arch.
Praia dos Estudantes is a tiny beach very close to the historic centre of Lagos. Its most recognisable feature is the small stone arch connecting two cliffs.
It is much more of a scenic stop than a full beach-day destination. But if you want a shoot and walk after the shoot right into Lagos centre for a nice breakfast, it's a great choice.
☀️ Sun & photography
Morning light works particularly well here, especially if you want to photograph the arch and surrounding cliffs.
Because of its small size, it can feel crowded during the middle of the day.
🚶 Access
Its biggest advantage is its location close to the centre of Lagos. You don't need to drive far to see it. However, access to the actual sand still involves steps and uneven terrain.

Porto de Mós
Best for: sunsets, couples, photography, families and visitors who want more space.
If you are specifically looking for a beautiful sunset beach near Lagos, Porto de Mós is one of my favorite choices. Unlike the smaller coves around Dona Ana and Camilo, Porto de Mós is a wide, open beach backed by warm-coloured cliffs.
🌅 Sun & photography
Because Porto de Mós faces towards the open Atlantic, it is particularly beautiful in the late afternoon and around sunset.
The combination of the low sun, golden cliffs and open horizon can create beautiful warm light. For a sunset photoshoot, this is one of the beaches I would consider first.
🚗 Access & crowds
Another advantage is accessibility. You can park close to the beach and avoid the long staircases found at Camilo and Dona Ana. The beach is also much larger, so it generally feels less crowded than the famous small coves.

Praia da Luz
Best for: families, relaxed beach days, restaurants and easy access.
Praia da Luz is west of Lagos and has a very different atmosphere from the dramatic coves closer to Ponta da Piedade. The large sandy beach sits beside the village, with restaurants, cafés and accommodation nearby. A great choice if you want a nice sunset shoot, and combine the visit with a dinner after on the boulevard of Luz.
☀️ Sun & photography
Praia da Luz can be beautiful in the late afternoon, particularly when the low sun catches the cliffs and village. It is also a good option for a relaxed family photoshoot because there is plenty of space and relatively easy access.
🚶 Access
One of Luz's biggest advantages is accessibility. You don't have to tackle the long cliff staircases found at Camilo, making it much easier for families with small children.

Praia do Burgau
Best for: an authentic Algarve village atmosphere and a beach with character.
Burgau is a little further west of Lagos and has a completely different feeling from the larger tourist beaches. The beach sits at the bottom of the traditional fishing village, with white houses climbing the hillside behind it.
☀️ Sun & photography
The surrounding cliffs and village can create beautiful late-afternoon light.
For photography, Burgau is particularly interesting if you want something that feels less like a typical beach holiday photograph and more like an Algarve travel story.
🚶 Access
The road down towards the beach is steep, and access to the sand isn't as straightforward as at Meia Praia, Praia da Luz or Porto de Mós. It is worth considering the walk back up when travelling with small children or lots of equipment.

Best time: Late afternoon
Praia da salema
Best for: families, a relaxed beach day and an authentic Algarve atmosphere.
Praia da Salema is a beautiful sandy beach in the traditional fishing village of Salema, west of Lagos. Compared with the famous beaches around central Lagos, Salema has a more relaxed and local atmosphere, with whitewashed houses and fishing boats surrounding the bay. Salema is usually less busy than Dona Ana and Camilo, although it can still become crowded during the peak summer months. The wide sandy beach gives families plenty of space, while the village offers cafés and restaurants close to the beach.
☀️ Sun & photography
Salema is particularly beautiful in the late afternoon and around sunset, when the low sunlight creates warm tones across the beach, cliffs and village.
For sunrise, the beaches around Lagos such as Camilo and Dona Ana are generally a better choice.
🚶 Access
Access to Salema is relatively easy compared with many of the cliff beaches around Lagos. You can park in the village and reach the beach without having to walk down a long staircase like at Praia do Camilo. There is a slope towards the beach, so it is not completely flat, but it is generally a practical option for families with children and beach equipment.
🦖 A little extra
At the eastern end of the beach, you can find dinosaur footprints preserved in the cliffs, making Salema an interesting stop for families and anyone who wants to explore something beyond the beach itself.

A final tip: the best beach depends on what you want
There isn't one single “best beach in Lagos.”
If you want the classic postcard view, choose Dona Ana or Camilo.

If you're looking for a beautiful sunset, head towards Porto de Mós, Praia da Luz or Burgau.
If you want easy access with children, choose Porto de Mós or Praia da Luz, or Salema
And if you want a quieter experience, try visiting one of the smaller beaches early in the morning or outside the busiest summer hours.
The Algarve coastline is incredibly varied, which is exactly what makes Lagos such a special place to explore and such a beautiful place for photography.
